We have all been working hard for many months and were invited by our consulting engineers to play golf with them. It was a beautiful day and we had a great time together.

Following are news and events regarding our firm in 2008
A new 120,000 sq ft intermediate school designed by principal, Alan Roberts, is well underway in Alvarado. The building has an organic form, responding to the site in terms of macro & micro climate, orientation, access and circulation needs, as well as to the needs and requests of our client. The overall form is unified but different areas are distinguished by height, and material types to provide a human scale.

The main circulation spine curves gently towards the north-west presenting persons approaching the school with the main entrance. This curve also eliminates the common "bowling alley" look of so many schools. Parent and bus traffic is completely separated. Even though the overall geometry of the building was based on curves and arcs there are actually no curved structural elements. After developing the concept Alan faceted and regularized the structure to achieve a high level of economy evidenced by the fact that the building came in at +/- $1.2 million under budget.

Consultants on this project are: Structural - UBS & E; MEP - Estes McClure & Associates; Civil - Adams Consulting Engineers; Geotechnical - Apex Geoscience; Food Services - Food Service Design

Principle, Alan Roberts was invited to speak to students at Hawkins ISD Africa. He was asked to explain some of the history, politics and what it was like to grow up there. (Alan's family has been in Africa for 320 years). The presentation went very well and all of the students seemed to have a good time. He has already been invited back for Part II.

Each year the principles at EHRC take a trip together to some site in the country where there are buildings of architectural merit. This trip serves both as continuing education and a retreat where they may spend some time together. This year it was Chicago, a city with hundreds of famous architectural sites.

This was the Segway Architectural Tour. After a few minutes of training on how to ride these devices we departed on a very interesting tour that lasted a few hours. The weather turned windy and cold and the guides gave us plastic rain suits to wear.
A dramatic fisheye shot of the John Hancock Building. Alan is an avid photographer and uses the new Olympus E-3 Pro digital SLR. This 8mm lens has a 180 degree field of view across the diagonal!
Here we are braving the rain and cold on the Architectural River Boat Tour. This was a very interesting tour and a wonderful way to get a good overview of the city. We highly recommend it. In this photo from left to right, Kent & Susan Harris & Terry & Mike Craig
